What to Wear for Pickleball: A No-Fuss Guide for Every Player
Share
There are two types of pickleball players. The ones who show up in whatever they grabbed off the floor, and the ones who actually thought about it. Both can play. But only one of them is comfortable three sets in, moving freely, and not quietly regretting their choice of jeans.
What you wear to pickleball matters more than most beginners expect. Not because the sport has a dress code (it does not), but because the right clothing makes a real difference in how you move, how long you last, and honestly, how much you enjoy being out there.
Here is what actually works on a pickleball court, and what to skip.
The most important thing: shoes
Before anything else, get the right shoes. This is the one piece of gear that genuinely affects your game and your joints. Running shoes are built for forward motion. Pickleball involves constant lateral movement, quick stops, and direction changes. A running shoe will not support that well, and over time your knees and ankles will feel it.
What you want is a court shoe, specifically one designed for tennis, pickleball, or indoor sports. They have reinforced sides, a flatter outsole, and the lateral support your feet actually need. This is the one non-negotiable.
Tops: comfort and fabric over everything
For the shirt itself, the main thing is fabric. Cotton holds sweat against your skin and gets heavy when you are playing hard in the sun. A moisture-wicking polyester blend, or any athletic fabric designed to pull sweat away, is a much better choice.
Beyond that, wear whatever fits your range of motion. You will be reaching for volleys, pivoting, extending overhead. A shirt that pulls across your shoulders or restricts your arms is going to bother you by the second game. Loose or athletic fits work well. So do sleeveless options in warm weather.
If you want something that does the job and says something about where you are with this sport, a funny pickleball tee is an easy win. Something like Dads Who Dink or Big Dink Energy makes the whole thing feel a little more like a vibe and a little less like gym class.
Bottoms: move freely, nothing else matters
Athletic shorts, leggings, skorts, whatever lets you crouch at the kitchen line and lunge for a wide ball without thinking about it. The main thing to avoid is anything restrictive or stiff. Denim, cargo pants, board shorts with no stretch, all bad ideas you will regret mid-rally.
For women, skorts have become the standard on most courts. They give you full mobility plus built-in coverage that tennis skirts do not always provide. For men, athletic shorts with pockets deep enough to hold a ball save a lot of time between serves.
Sun protection for outdoor play
If you play outdoors, which most recreational pickleball is, sun protection matters more than most people plan for. A hat or visor helps with glare and keeps the sun out of your eyes during serves and overheads. Sunglasses designed for sports (with a wraparound fit that stays on when you move) are worth it if you play regularly. And a light long-sleeve layer or UPF shirt is worth considering for longer sessions.
What not to wear
Keep it simple: avoid anything you would not wear to a gym. Jeans, sandals, flip-flops, and open-toed shoes are the main ones. Beyond footwear, the only real issue is anything so loose it could catch a paddle or get in the way of movement.
The t-shirt rule
One thing pickleball gets right that a lot of sports do not: the vibe is casual and social. You do not need to look like you are competing at a national tournament to show up and play. A good t-shirt is completely fine, and frankly it is what most recreational players wear. The difference is wearing one that actually fits, moves with you, and does not soak through in the first twenty minutes.
If you are looking for something to wear that also makes a point about how seriously (or not seriously) you take the sport, our collection of pickleball t-shirts has a few options that tend to land well on the court. Whether it is a gift or just something for yourself, a shirt that gets a laugh before the game even starts is never a bad call.
